BLVD Arts Finalists

1. Kirk Kain
Title: “City Solitude”
Description: This feel I was going for was the odd dissonance you can get surrounded by a big city with all it’s buildings and signs of hustle and bustle, yet still have that feeling of lonely solitude

2. Caps
Title: “Harsh Reality”
Description: My piece aimed to take a different approach to visualize how I have always viewed Sunset Blvd growing up in L.A. For me it was quite simple, “FILM, ART, SEX, DRUGS, ROCK & ROLL.” This type, combined with the vintage film strip (representing the movie industries prominent impact), voluptuous girl from the hood, and homeless man sitting on a street bench…all illustrate the realities that have and still exist today on Sunset Blvd. .

3. Adam Moorhead
Title: “Cruisin down Sepulveda Blvd”
Description: I grew up in Granada Hills, about a mile from Sepulveda Blvd. When I think Sepulveda the first thing that comes to mind is Cruisin’. Sundays the Blvd would be lined with lowriders and classic rides. It is my rendition of a strip of Sepulveda Blvd, full of cars cruisin’, buildings that would likely be spotted along Sepulveda, a mountain background and a beautiful female onlooker.

4. Alex Rodriguez (Duce)
Title: Sunset Junction
Description: When I think about Sunset blvd I think of the up and coming neighborhoods of Silverlake and Echo Park. It amazes me to see such transformation that has taken place in the last five years… Out with the old and in with the new. Back in the days these neighborhoods where dangerous and gang infested and now thanks to gentrification its completely transformed in to the hipster play-land that it has become. One can see the change both as good or bad. The one thing that I like is it brings more diversity into the neighborhood and brakes down segregated ideals… it forces people of different genders, ideals, religious, economic and racial backgrounds to live among each other as a community.

I wanted this piece to have a more youthful and festive mood to it…I set the stage with a young and hip man walking towards us, in the background you see, buildings depicting murals and a very well known sign that reads “SUNSET JUNCTION”   The reason why I chose the Sunset Junction is to illustrate the union on the old neighborhood to the new one.

The girl on the top radiates L.A. cool as she struts in between a row of palm trees. while a sky full of diamonds sets the mood for this mural.

5.  Page Redford
Title:  Hollywood Parade
Description: My work showcases some of the famous buildings and characters of Hollywood Boulevard. This is not far from how I imagined Hollywood to look before I first visited.

The mural is meant to look like a parade of sorts with all of the characters marching down the road. I’ve noticed that with all the costumed folks and music in Hollywood, it feels like a parade has just happened on the Boulevard, but you always just miss it. This mural captures that moment, even if it never really happened.
